How to Select a Hydrogen Compressor

hydrogen compressor

A hydrogen compressor is an equipment that allows for the efficient compression of hydrogen gas. This technology is particularly useful for energy storage applications since hydrogen is a renewable source that can store energy generated by wind or solar power. Hydrogen compressors are also used in industrial applications to create high-pressure hydrogen for use in fuel cells.

The most important factors to consider when selecting a hydrogen compressor include reliability, durability, and flow rate. Reliability refers to the ability of the compressor to function continuously without failure for long periods of time, while durability is related to the amount of wear and tear the equipment can withstand. Flow rate is determined by the maximum volume of hydrogen that can be compressed in a given period of time.

Hydrogen Compressor Technology: Advancements Driving the Clean Energy Revolution

Hydrogen compression requires much more energy than that required for air. For example, an isothermal compression of hydrogen up to 1000 bar would require 2.6 kWh/kg, while an isentropic process at the same pressure requires 8.6 kWh/kg. In addition, mechanical losses can significantly increase the overall power consumption of the compression process.

Working with hydrogen presents risks, especially when safety precautions are not taken. It only takes oxygen and a source of ignition to form a combustible mixture, so it is important to ensure that all hydrogen compressors are properly installed in secure locations. Additionally, the compressor should be connected to a control system that monitors the compressor’s performance and is capable of shutting down the machine if it reaches unsafe levels.
